Vernacular Baton Rouge

VBR1.jpg
We in graphic design call the graffiti and hand painted signage of a given area “the vernacular.” And I have been impressed for years by the vernacular here in Baton Rouge. I don’t know how many times I’ve said to myself “I should take a picture of that.” So here it is, the first in a series. These unsigned heads face River Road just south of the I-10 bridge.

where and when did vernacular start showing up in this world as what ‘the Other’ might do?? or the Self Taught. As in self taughtology.

h-m-m-m- When did ‘vernacular’ become such a catchy word…visiting Las Vegas days ? Does it mean : ‘them’, the yahoos, the Other. Or only self taught as in self taughtology.? When and where ?

In this case, vernacular means created by an untrained designer. Self-taught, or taught by other untrained designers in the community. It differs from that which is taught in the schools. Just as the vernacular hip-hop language differs from that which is taught in an English class.

Here’s your next book! Take about 100 pictures of these efforts, interview a few “artists,” add some erudite commentary, and title it “ Vernacular: BR”.
I’ll buy the first copy, for my cocktail table in the Old Folks Home.
